OYSTERS & RAMEN UNDER THE TRAIN TRACKS

Have you ever tried dinning in a restaurant right beneath the train tracks? I first experienced it when I went for drinks with friends at an “Izakaya”, a typical Japanese bar, under the tracks beside Ueno Station. Such places are quite common in Japan which I find really amusing. If you watch anime or read manga, the depiction of those locations are quite accurate and it’s unbelievable that I’m able to experience it firsthand now that I’m living in Japan.

BANBAN Ramen Shop

Lunch: 11:30AM-2PM Dinner 6PM-12:30AM/ Sundays 11:30AM-10:30PM LOCATION: 773-3 Kawadamachi, Utsunomiya, Tochigi 321-0111

BANBAN is a Ramen shop located beneath the Shinkansen train tracks in Utsunomiya. Just like most of the restaurants I go to, I found out about it through my local friend who’s been giving us really good recommendations for places to eat. Aside from Ramen they also serve oysters for 500¥ per 2 pieces and “chahan”, fried rice, which I really love. I had to oder my second bowl of fried rice because I liked it so much. The ramen I ordered was spicy and I had a level 2. It was ok for me but was a bit too spicy according to my Japanese husband. I don’t know a lot of Japanese who can handle spicy food. I like this Ramen but I still prefer the one on the picture above because it tastes much better for me. I guess that’s why it’s the most popular amongst the customers.

The restaurant also installed plastic divisions that wasn’t there before. This is their safety measure during this time of pandemic as most establishments in Japan.

Things I Like About the Restaurant: ✅Value for your money ✅Thin ramen noodles ✅Cleanliness ✅Food taste quality ✅Just the right amount per serving ✅Fast service ✅Accepts Paypay Things I don’t Like: ❗️Location is too far from everything. You’ll need to drive. ❗️Staff wasn’t as foreigner friendly. Speaking Japanese(or being one) could help.

Would I recommend this place? The answer is YES. I honestly think that trying good food is always worth it regardless of the location or staff. Anyway, service differs from one person to another so if you have the passion for food it’s always good to give it a try.
